200 Hawksbill Turtle Hatchlings Released in the Waters of Bidadari Island

A total of 200 Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricata) hatchlings were released into the waters of Bidadari Island, Seribu Selatan Island District, Seribu Islands in commemoration of National Nature Conservation Day 2025.

The activity was initiated by PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol in collaboration with Jakarta Food Security, Marine and Agriculture (KPKP) Agency, Jakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry, and the Seribu Island Marine National Park.

President Director of PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol, Winarto, said this activity carried the theme 'A Thousand Baby Turtles, a Million Hopes." This means that a million hopes are continuously voiced for conservation and making a real contribution through ongoing activities.

"This activity is our real step in protecting and preserving marine biodiversity, especially the Hawksbill Turtle as one of the species that is highly endangered," he said, Thursday (8/21).

This conservation program, he explained, not only helps increase the Hawksbill Turtle population but also educates the public about the importance of maintaining coastal and marine ecosystems.

"We are committed to continuing to support conservation efforts and hope that this activity can be an inspiration for many parties," he explained.

Winarto added that, in addition to releasing the hatchlings, educational sessions on turtle conservation and bird watching were also held as a form of introduction to the local ecosystem and animals on Bidadari Island.

Meanwhile, Jakarta KPKP Agency Head, Hasudungan A Sidabalok, stated this activity is part of a series of events commemorating National Nature Conservation Day, as well as a reminder that conservation is not just a ceremony, but a continuous movement to protect our biodiversity.

"The hundreds of baby turtles that were released today represent a million hopes so that future generations can continue to enjoy the richness of Indonesia's seas," he stated.

He added that efforts to conserve turtles and coastal ecosystems are part of the Jakarta Provincial Government's commitment to maintaining the balance of nature while supporting food security and environmental sustainability.

Hasudungan assessed that Bidadari Island is very suitable to support the habitat activities of hatchlings, because the sand conditions are still well textured, the water content is ideal, and predation is still within normal limits.

"Hopefully this will be a momentum for conservation efforts with the hope of maintaining and increasing the hawksbill turtle population," he stated.
